The Purple Shoes Emily's Secret
Marilyn Parker and Lois Longbrake
6-11
What do the magic of purple shoes, the exhilaration of a new friendship and the problem of homelessness have in common? When Ashley starts fourth grade at a new school, she’s nervous about making friends. Buoyed by the purchase of a unique, one-of-a-kind pair of purple shoes, she finds the confidence to make a new friend—a best friend, Emily. But Emily has a secret and Ashley is determined to find out what it is.
The Purple Shoes—a chapter book for second, third, and fourth graders—explores the meaning of both friendship and home. It also explores homelessness and the range of problems children face when parents lose their jobs
When People Came Volume I
From when humans first arrived in North America to the end of the French and Indian War
Compiled by Robert G. Erb
Ages 8+
Full-Color
The exploration and colonization of what is now North America and the United States from the last ice age to the present is a fascinating story. It is a story of how North America developed and how the United States became the greatest nation on earth. This is not to imply that all of its history was kind, fair, and gentle for we have not yet come close to perfection, but we have become the most giving nation on earth and the strongest force for world peace whether through exploration, purchase, or treaty.
When People Came, a five-volume set, is just a brief story. The purpose is to give the reader an overview of many important happenings that played a defining role in the development of North American and United States. These volumes are a very short story of that early saga from pre-history with the Paleo Indians at the end of the last ice age to 1890 with the end of the Indian Wars.
When People Came Volume II

Volume II starts with the colonists who began to push the boundaries of the new land westward, and the struggle with English rule leading to the American Revolutionary War.
It’s a story of how an incredible underdog (these 13 divided colonies) came together and won their freedom and liberty from England. We learn how our Founders came together to build the foundation of this new country by determining what kind of people and nation we wanted to be. Lastly, we discuss the Old Northwest Indian War and our continued conflict with the native people who struggled to keep their own culture and liberty.

In volume III we see how this new nation would move farther westward to the Pacific Ocean with Lewis and Clark. The nation is challenged by new and dangerous conflicts such as the War of 1812, which tests our resolve and commitment to the freedom we won in the Revolutionary War. You also learn of the impact the Fur Trade had on the Nation’s growth and how the mountain men and other explorers help open the west for future settlement.
